Meet "Rescue Sam"

“Rescue Sam” is a St. Bernard “Rescue” Dog. The St. Bernard is a large breed of dog originally bred for both rescue and as a working dog. The St. Bernard is known for its loyalty & vigilance and is tolerant of both children & animals. Because of these traits, it has become a family dog. They also make great watchdogs, as their size can be intimidating to strangers, though their temperament is gentle.
"Rescue Sam” is our award-winning collegiate-like mascot who is affectionately named after our beloved Sam Perry as he too, was well-known for his never ending loyalty, vigilance, tolerance and gentle temperament.
"Rescue Sam’s” mission is to serve as the Fredericksburg Rescue Squad's "Educational Ambassador" by educating and promoting Emergency Medical Services in our community.
"Rescue Sam" joined FRS in October 2006, making his first debut at our 2006-2007 Annual Installation of Officers & Banquet. “Rescue Sam” enjoyed the evening meeting his fellow FRS members & guests and was even spotted on the dance floor! “Rescue Sam” is a wonderful addition to our membership and has been well received by all!
You never know where you may see “Rescue Sam!” He’s made appearances during EMS Week Celebrations, the EMS Convention, in parades and the Fredericksburg Fair. He has also been seen at Hurkamp Park, Bragg Hill Family Life Center, Hope House, Thurman Brisben Center, Mary Washington Hospital’s Pediatric Unit and Emergency Room, just to name a few.
Community service runs in “Rescue Sam’s” family, too! Two of his cousins are “Sparky the Firehouse Dog” and the Police Department’s “McGruff the Crime Dog!”
Keep your cameras handy! “Rescue Sam” loves having his picture taken with children and adults as he continues to promote EMS & the dedicated volunteer services of the time-honored Fredericksburg Rescue Squad!
"Rescue Sam" was honored with the Governor's EMS Award for "Outstanding Contribution to EMS for Children" during the Governor's EMS Awards Banquet on November 15, 2008 in Norfolk, Virginia.
